Finding the right space

Building up to the “right” space

I have painted in various environments since becoming a professional abstract artist in 2015.  From a corner in an unfinished basement with no window space, an outside studio space in an old factory to my current studio space.  I found that the paintings I created changed based on the environment (and light) I painted in. 

I think where the journey has lead me is to just the right space for me.  In late 2020, we finished my ideal space.  Installing storage, a cleaning station and counterspace into the work area and a 8 foot x 4 foot finishing area with storage in another room.  The space, with the exception of the floor is almost entirely white, allowing it to be free from distractions and truly a space to create in.  You can see the effects of painting in this space in my most recent series “Stories of my Youth “.

Here is what I would recommend

• Build your studio space as clean and clutter free as possible

• Paint the environment a light, neutral color.  This keeps the eye free from distractions

• • • Bringing color in as you like

• • • Allowing you to focus on your work

• If possible have controlled outdoor lighting.  This is just window space with a blind.  This also allows you to work with various lighting and draw inspiration from those lighting changes.  (sunrise to sunset or clear days to stormy weather)

• Overhead lighting should be natural, 6500 kelvin recommended.  Use supplemental lighting as needed, either work lights or diffused lighting

• Keep supplies close but organized.

• Have a cleaning station in your room.  This also preserves other areas of your home.
• Dedicate time to clean the slate.  Bring your room back in balance every couple of months, clear the clutter, recycle or discard unused materials and refresh.
